Legal Challenges

Another strategy of the Committee on Appeal for Human Rights (COAHR) was legal challenges to Atlanta city ordinances. COAHR supported several law suits against the City, targeting hospitals, parks, pools, etc., the kinds of facilities listed in the Appeal as the most egregious to black Atlantans.

The COAHR filed two successful suits in federal court: one that challenged segregation in city facilities of all kinds, and one against the segregation of services at Grady Hospital.  The suit against Grady Hospital led to the desegregation of all hospitals in the South.
