The Atlanta Airport
Mayor Jackson’s push for greater minority involvement in city contracts focused on the midfield terminal project at Atlanta’s airport. Despite sharp criticism, Jackson stood unflinching in his demands. Until they were met, work on the project was delayed. Still, the new terminal was completed on schedule and on budget. The joint venture concept established by Jackson’s administration, involving both majority and minority firms, set a standard for other American cities. It also established the airport as an economic engine for the Southeast and fueled the growth of Atlanta’s south side.
